Recently the Orange County Register reported that a surgeon at Children's Hospital operated on the wrong part of a child's body. It seems this is the third incident in four years.
The child was having a small fold of tissue behind the upper lip surgically loosened. Instead of performing this procedure, the surgeon loosened tissue underneath the child's tongue. Luckily, the child will not experience any long-term harm. Even though the hospital had rules in place to avoid mistakes such as this one, it happened anyway.
The hospital advised that it would work to implement process improvements and refine policies and procedures on an as needed basis.
