Drowning is a silent death. While spending time in the pool is a great way to enjoy the summer weather, it is important to remember water safety rules. It was a tragic start to summer when a 3-year old girl drowned in a backyard swimming pool recently.
When paramedics arrived, they found the parents attempting to administer CPR; they took over and then transported her to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Reports indicated that the child had not been seen for about 10 minutes before she was found at the bottom of the pool. I cannot stress enough that any pool, filled or not, can be lethal for children. You must make sure there is a locked safety gate around it at all times.
There are a frighteningly large number of individuals, including children, who drown every year in a swimming pool, and the situation has caused families unlimited grief and emotional distress. Sadly, many of those accidents could have been prevented - with a locked gate or proper supervision.
The statistics are alarming. A recent report from eSafetyAlert stated that in the first five months of 2013, more than 250 children have drown in backyard swimming pools, spas and other water hazards. It also stated that more than 1,000 children under the age of 19 have had 'near-drowning' incidents. Toddlers under the age of five are of particular concern.
In addition, did you know that 10 people die every day from unintentional drowning in the United States - about 20 percent are under the age of 14?
Now that summer is here and the sun comes out every day, so do many children and families. It is unfortunate, but with the dangers that swimming pools present, your neighbor's backyard can easily become a dangerous area. Bringing forth swimming pool accidents, but this year we can be more cautious and preventative.
