Cyclists and texting

Recently an article appeared in the Orange County Register newspaper, which made a lot of sense; I thought I would share it with you. It was about a proposed bill that would increase fines for drivers who violate the hands-free and anti-texting laws. This includes bicycles.

The State Senator in Northern California introduced Senate Bill 1475. This bill makes it illegal to use a phone while riding a bike and it increases fines for those using a phone (talking or texting) without a hand-free device. A first-time offense would cost the driver $50 and additional offenses would be $100. A texting fine, now $20 would become $100.

According to the California Highway Patrol, because of the hands-free cell phone law, there has been a 20% reduction infatalities and collisions in California. This new bill would promote safety for those who use a bicycle for transportation.
