Toyota once again has recalled over two million vehicles in the United States to address accelerator pedals that could become entrapped in the floor mats or carpeting.
After the Transportation Department reviewed thousands of pages of Toyota documents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration asked Toyota to recall these vehicles. A total of more than 14 million vehicles have been recalled since 2009.
The company has been under a lot of pressure since August 2009 when four people were killed in a high-speed crash involving a Lexus.
Transportation Department personnel said the problems stem from mechanical defects and pedal misapplication where the driver stepped on the accelerator instead of the brakes. The company has paid the U. S. government close to $50 million in fines for its handling of three recalls so far.
Toyota is facing many lawsuits from owners of their vehicles. The NHYSA has received several thousand reports of sudden acceleration incidents, including allegations of almost 100 deaths. NHTSA has confirmed five of them.
