A 14-year old skateboarder, who at first was walking along a street near Fontana, decided to get onto his skateboard in a traffic lane directly in front of an SUV. The area does not have paved sidewalks - only dirt.
The SUV could not stop in time and struck him. It is not currently known if the driver was distracted. Statistics show that accidents with pedestrians and skateboarders are the second largest category of motor vehicle deaths and injuries. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died a few hours later.
California law states that it is a driver's responsibility to drive safely while sharing the road with others, such as a skateboarder. The law also states that all skateboarders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet. It is not immediately known if the victim was wearing one.
Skateboarders have rights on the roads also. If you or someone in your family is injured or killed on a skateboard due to someone else's negligence, you may be entitled to monetary damages for their death, injuries or pain and suffering.
