Complications After Traumatic Brain Injury

Even though the brain is well protected by a fairly thick skull, the head can still be struck or impacted enough to cause damage.

There are many causes for a traumatic brain injury, including:

  • Automobile accident
  • Boating accident
  • Fall from a high place
  • Sporting injury
  • Impact with a hard surface
  • Assault
  • Medical malpractice

A traumatic brain injury occurs when an external force traumatically injures the brain. It is a complex injury with a broad spectrum of symptoms and disabilities. The impact can be devastating.

Unfortunately, seizures may develop immediately after an injury or can take months or years to show up. The risk of seizures is related to the severity of the injury; however, even mild to moderate injuries can result in seizures. The most common type of seizure related to traumatic brain injury is known as "Grand Mal".

Reports indicate that individuals, who suffer from psychogenetic non-epileptic seizures and then suffer from a traumatic brain injury, are at a much higher risk of suffering from mental problems that include depression, mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Researchers discovered that 45% of patients who suffered from brain injury and seizures also had numerous mental health issues, such as mood disorders. It was noted that seizure patients who did not have a brain injury did not report these issues.

For baseball fans - Arizona's Diamondback's Brandon McCarthy, who sustained a traumatic brain injury last year when he was struck in the head by a line drive off a bat recently collapsed at a restaurant after suffering from a seizure. He told fans, "There's always a chance of happening any time you have a bruise on your brain it doesn't actually ever heal, which always kind of leaves you at least somewhat vulnerable to it." He's taking anti-seizure medication and is confident he'll be fine.
