Disaster In The Air: Asiana Flight 214

The first Boeing 777 went into service in 1995. It has a maximum range of 7,725 nautical miles, with a typical cruise speed of about 570 mph.

Asiana Airlines flight 214 crashed landed at San Francisco Airport this past saturday July 6th, 2013. The Boeing 777 hit a rocky sea wall at the edge of the airport so hard that debris from the wall was found hundreds of feet down the runway.

It was a landing that killed two people and injured almost 200 people. It was also supposed to be a new beginning for two young women coming from China to the United States to find the path to success and happiness.

The two passengers killed in the Asiana Airlines crash were Chinese students seated near the rear of the plane who were set to attend a summer exchange program.

Ye Mengyuan, a talented 17-year-old gymnast, and 16-year-old Wang Linjia, a physics marvel, hailed from China's eastern Zhejiang province and were found on the tarmac among the scorched wreckage of the Boeing 777.

Investigators are trying to determine what happened in this horrific accident. The crew was experienced flyers, the weather was near perfect, there were no problems reported during the flight and the jet, itself, was advanced in technology. Preliminary data showed the crew may have let the plane's airspeed deteriorate upon landing.

It is most unfortunate for the two young women who set out to have a great summer - only to die in one of the worst disasters in years. What's even worse is that the coroner's office believes that one of the girls actually survived the crash, but was run over by a rescue vehicle rushing to the scene.

My deepest condolences go out to the families of these young victims. In addition, I wish the injured victims a speedy and complete recovery.
