Fatal accident in Riverside blamed on airbag

When we think of fatal car accidents, the image that comes to mind is usually a negligent, distracted or drunk driver. However, there are times when these factors play little or no role in a car accident. Oftentimes, car part manufacturers fail to catch a defect or don't properly vet the parts that are used in today's vehicles, which can lead to exacerbated injuries and even death.

Takata air bags are being blamed for several deaths around the world, including one woman right here in Riverside, California. The 50-year-old woman was driving 25 miles per hour in her Honda Civic when she collided head first with a Chevrolet pickup truck. She was taken to the hospital for treatment but later died from the injuries inflicted in the crash.

After an investigation, authorities determined that the Takata airbag was to blame for the woman's death. These airbags have been shown to inflate too forcefully, causing a canister inside to explode and throw metal shrapnel all over the car. Experts believe this if because Takata uses ammonium nitrate, an explosive chemical, to inflate their airbags, something no other manufacturer does.

Takata airbags have been responsible for as many as 16 deaths and more than 100 million of them have now been recalled.

The woman's son is considering legal action, which is perfectly understandable. If you're involved in a car accident, don't assume that a manufacturing defect didn't play a role in it. An attorney may be able to conduct an investigation and help you get compensation for medical bills, funeral costs and lost wages.
